The name of the restaurant refers to a signature grill that cooks its steak at a temperature of 1800 degrees Fahrenheit; that results in melt.in.your.mouth steak.
Jeepers, I didn't think a night could come close to Carne but this was very, very good. 1800 was hyped way in advance, no doubt about it, and with the Tough Crowd ™ in full force, expectations going in were pretty high. It had it all: a fine establishment with old school doorman, cheeky maître d' who had us hook, line and sinker, friendly helpful waitron (must be that Zim education), top notch fillet steak at a decent price, cold Jack Black and wifebeater on tap. The wait for the food was a little longer than we would have liked. But when it came, my my was it good. Steaks scored a 9.0 average – bumped up by that incredible Belgium red wine jus. Crispy, light, hot onion rings were ordered late (our fault) but arrived just in time to finish off the meal and soak up the remainder of that jus. Chips were good but portion size was frugal, but at least they were included in the price (unlike Balthazar). Tonight, the evening was filled with good political discussions; including talk of taking over the Green Party! Great mates, great chow. No surprise 1800 takes a podium spot as a Steak Night. Overall: 8.4 (average of scores) Steak: 8.9 Sides: 6.2 Service: 8.4 Value: 9.6
