Steak is often seen as a decadent treat — something to cap off the week, best enjoyed with loosened belts and a good glass of red. But what if steak wasn’t just indulgent... what if it was healthy?

We’ve long known steak is packed with protein and essential nutrients, but for many of us, it’s still considered more of an occasional splurge than a dietary staple. That wasn’t the case for our distant ancestors. For them, meat — steak included — was a dietary cornerstone, not a guilty pleasure. That ancestral eating pattern is what inspired today’s Paleo movement.

Paleo vs. Keto: The Meat of the Matter
If you’ve heard of the Keto diet, you’ve probably come across Paleo too. While both promote high protein, low carb eating, they take slightly different approaches.

Paleo, short for “Paleolithic,” aims to mirror the way our ancestors ate — focusing on whole, unprocessed foods that would have been available before farming began. That means cutting out processed carbs like bread, cereal, and refined sugar, and embracing foods like steak, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. Essentially, if a caveman couldn’t eat it, you probably shouldn’t either.

In contrast, Keto is all about macronutrient ratios. The goal is to shift your body into a state of ketosis, where it burns fat for fuel instead of carbs. To get there, your daily calories should typically break down like this:
  • Fat: 65–90%
  • Protein: 10–30%
  • Carbs: Less than 5%
Unlike Paleo, Keto doesn’t ban specific foods outright — it just limits carbs to the extreme. The result? Your body starts using stored fat as energy, which can lead to weight loss.

Are They Really That Different?
While Paleo is more of a lifestyle change and Keto is more scientific in its approach, the overlap is clear: both encourage whole, unprocessed foods, high fat and protein, and minimal carbs. In both diets, steak is absolutely on the menu — and with zero sugar, it's guilt-free by default.

So… Can Steak Help You Lose Weight?
The short answer? Maybe.

Studies have shown that high-fat, low-carb diets like Paleo and Keto can lead to fat loss, especially in the short term. Over time — around the two-year mark — results tend to plateau, and long-term sustainability becomes more of a question.

However, one key benefit of these diets is satiety. Fat and protein keep you fuller for longer, which can naturally reduce cravings and help prevent overeating. That alone might explain some of the weight loss success people report.

The Bottom Line
While Paleo and Keto aren’t magic solutions, early research is promising. And if they help you ditch processed foods and sugar in favour of nutrient-dense meals — like a well-cooked steak — they’re certainly a step in the right direction.

So yes, you can enjoy that Sunday steakhouse visit. Just maybe hold the bread basket.
