Tucked neatly into the heart of the revamped Westlake Lifestyle Shopping Centre, Cattle Baron Westlake is a breath of fresh air in Cape Town’s steakhouse scene. With sweeping floor-to-ceiling windows offering stunning views of Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak, this contemporary and stylish venue blends old-school steakhouse charm with modern-day elegance. It’s the kind of place where you could just as easily take a business client for a power lunch as you could celebrate a birthday or share an intimate dinner.

From the outset, the Cattle Baron was inviting. The warm greeting at the door set a tone of attentiveness and genuine hospitality. We arrived with expectations high and appetites primed for serious carnivorous indulgence-and Cattle Baron delivered.

The Steak – 7.3/10
The popular choice of cut was the Chateaubriand - a prime cut taken from the centre of the tenderloin, prized for its unmatched tenderness. It’s a non-weight-bearing muscle, making this section free of tough fibres, resulting in a silky, buttery texture that truly melts in your mouth. And melt it did - rich, delicate, and beautifully cooked.

A few guys opted for the Fillet Habanero - a bold and fiery dish that left more than one diner reaching for a napkin to mop a sweaty brow. Definitely a hit for those who like their steak with a serious kick.

The Sides – 3.4/5
While the spotlight is always firmly on the steak, the supporting acts held their own. The ribs, ordered as starters, were unanimously voted "off the charts"-fall-off-the-bone tender with a sweet-and-sticky glaze that left us licking our fingers. The chips were crisp and golden, while the veggies retained a welcome bit of bite.

Service – 3.5/5
The service was efficient, friendly, and well-paced. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the menu and handled our large group with professionalism and a relaxed demeanour. Drinks were served promptly, and dishes arrived hot and well-timed. And the absence of a corkage fee is always welcome.

Ambiance – 3.2/5
The décor blends modern chic with rustic notes - leather seating, dark wood accents, and ambient lighting all contribute to a stylish yet comfortable setting. The views of Table Mountain, particularly as the sun sets and the city lights flicker on, add a magical backdrop to the meal.

Value – 3.2/5
Cattle Baron Westlake offers solid value. While not inexpensive, the quality of the food, the setting, and the BYO wine policy make it a compelling choice, especially for groups or special occasions.

Overall Score - 6.9/10
Cattle Baron Westlake doesn’t reinvent the steakhouse, but it certainly refines it. With well-cooked steaks, standout ribs, efficient service, and an unbeatable setting, it’s a welcome addition to the Westlake dining scene. A must-visit for meat lovers seeking a memorable meal with a view.
