As is the SteakBoyz tradition, in November we return to that year’s winning steakhouse for. We were eager to see whether the 2016 winner, Don Armando, could once again deliver.
Food We started with lamb skewers (fantastic), blood sausage (disappointing) and sweetbreads (mixed reviews). For mains, most of the table went for the fillet on the bone. The problem with the winning steakhouse is the expectations are high and difficult to meet. The reviews ranged from ‘that’s the best steak I’ve had this year’ to ‘average’. Others ordered the prime rib which also got rave reviews. On the whole, the Don delivered on the night, but there were a few disappointed punters. The chips were perfect, but the other sides were possibly the highlight of the evening. It was a nice change to have something different rather than the usual creamed spinach and butternut. We had a white bean salad, which was immediately demolished, and delicious deep-fried baby marrow. For dessert we had Dom Pedros, and shared a few plates of pancakes with dulce de leche. The pancakes were a hit during our previous visit and didn’t disappoint on this occasion either. Service Our waitress was friendly and efficient. She also knew the various cuts very well. Her recommendations were spot on. Verdict The Don’s overall score was only 0.1 below, its September score. That says a lot about its consistency. Don Armando is not cheap, but they consistently impress their patrons with some of the best steaks in Cape Town. The Don proved themselves a worthy winner for the year.
