 H has been around the block a couple of times, and it looks like every pass he’s made he picked up some little eclectic gem to bring back to his house. House of H is edgy and real in a way that very few restaurants can pull off – it works because that’s who Heinrich is, and because the food he serves up is absolutely superb.
Ambiance There’s a great vibe at H – don’t go expecting the silver service though; it’s a slightly crazy mixture of canteen vs. cantina. Long tables with bench seating, a kombi that met a bar, and an open kitchen where you can see H working his magic. And an expandable stairwell. Food It’s all about the grill, and what comes off that grill is fantastic. The ribeye on the night was excellent – even racking up that elusive perfect 10 from one of the boyz. Excellent chips and a nice selection of unusual veg and salads (not a creamed spinach or pureed butternut in sight, halleluiah!). The slow roasted brisket deserves a special mention as a starter. Unfortunately we didn’t do too well on desserts – worth mentioning that if you are a big group like we were and are planning on all having dessert, either reserve them up front or let them know when you book that you’re looking forward to sampling some chocolate brownies. Service Here’s a little curveball. House of H is self-service, sorta. There always seems to be someone at hand to help out, but you’re going to get up and order your own steak, grab your sides and get your drinks. And back to the canteen vibe – in normal play you’re issued a swipe card on entry, which you swipe for all your purchases. At the end of the night everyone pays for their swipe card – it’s a genius way of sorting out any split-the-bill issues, and works like a charm. For our rather large gathering where we split the bill evenly anyway, we just had 4 floating swipe cards on the table that anyone could grab and use anytime. Verdict We loved this place, its good honest food done well. You also get the feeling that this is something H has dreamed about all his life – the fruition of long learning all around the world, so you spend your money quite happily knowing that you’re helping someone achieve their purpose rather than filling the coffers of yet another soulless value engineered corporate chain. We’ll be going back to H again and again, cause local really is lekker.
