The Hussar Camps Bay proves that you can be owned by a major South African steakhouse franchise, deliver an exceptional eating experience and still be crowned Steakboyz Best Steakhouse 2015 all in one go. Which is why we went back there for our final steak night of the year for 2015.
Our seventh visit to the Hussar and third visit to the Camps Bay branch in five years. We were coming back with weighty expectations given the fact that an incredibly high standard had been set by most of the establishments we had visited during the year. A large part of the Hussar victory of 2015 had been attributed to some great cuts of fillet in particular and really warm and hospitable service by then manager Lance and his team. Wes took over from where Lance left off and proceeded to welcome us into the cosy bar area where we sank a few pre-dinner lagers in anticipation of the night ahead. Food Our usual semi-private dining area was bedecked with an array of complimentary hors d'oeuvres including biltong, olives and crispy root-vegetable snacks. Wes did mention quietly that we need not order the starters as they had a few treats lined up and, deliver them they did. Long marrow bones, bitterballen, calamari (highly recommended), wors and various other delectable bites arrived en masse and we were left wondering if any of us had space for the mains. As per usual there were an array of cuts ordered with the usual suspects choosing fillet not being disappointed. A few of the more adventurous amongst us tried the fillet on the bone and feedback overall was that it was good. But it has to be said that fillet at the Hussar does not disappoint – ever. Justin’s chateaubriand was highly acclaimed and Olas, Richie and Reen’s t-bones were the only steaks that seemed to be a bit of a let down. In two instances the Hussar quickly rectified this and sent them on their way with a fresh fillet. Sides were of the standard Hussar fare and the obligatory Dom Pedro’s were rolled out towards the end of the evening. Service As per usual right up there from the Hussar. Knowing that they were the 2015 winners certainly helped things and Wes and his team went out of their way to accommodate where possible. Verdict Steakboyz has had two great meals at the Hussar Camps Bay in 2015. I feel that the Hussar understands what Steakboyz is all about, they get us. And in return it’s hardly a surprise they were crowned the Best Steakhouse in 2015. Thanks to Wes and his crew for a great evening, for going above and beyond wherever possible and for recognising us by hanging our certificate up on the night and placing our official winning decal on the door. Steakboyz highly recommends the Hussar Camps Bay, we are sure it won’t disappoint. Long live Hussar Camps Bay, long live.
