The Sydney Steak Boyz met for the second meal together on the 27th of April at Kingsley Australian Steak House in King Street, Sydney. Located down a short lane off King Street the heritage listed sand stone building was constructed in 1833. Previously used as a soap and candle factory the dining room retains the old world industrial charm dinners would expect from buildings built during that time. Describing themselves as a steak house that “has led the way in beef trends on the Sydney food scene since 1994” they certainly have the longevity and reputation to match it with other steak house in Sydney. Offering a wide variety of grain and pasture fed cuts from the Darling Downs in Queensland to the paddocks of Gippsland Victoria we were all looking forward to sampling the best Kingsley’s Steak House offers. Greeted at the door we were seated in the middle of the dining room by Robert who was quick to offer a couple of beers while we waited for the late arrivals. Our table of 8 was surrounded by groups of 4 or greater but noise was never an issue and allowed for easy conversation across our table. A couple of beers and a glass of wine before we got stuck into the menu and ordered our meals. Starters To whet the appetite we shared a few plates of Garlic Prawns and some Calamari. Presentation was good and each of the plates left empty in anticipation of the mains. Mains With plenty of cut options in the menu you are left with a choice of purely grass fed beef or grain finished beef. The menu offers clear and helpful description of each option. Scores showed a mixed bag from the group with most agreeing good but not great results with an average score of 6 for the mains. 350g Rib eye proved to be the most popular with scores ranging from 6.5 down to a disappointing 5. Two orders of the 300g New York Strip loin scored 6 and 6.5. One order each of the Eye Fillet and a Surf and Turf (penalty to be paid at next dinner) made up the balance scoring 6 each. 220g fillet $44.90 Sides We ordered 1 each of all the salads for the middle of the table. Presentation was nice, all ingredients were fresh with lots of flavour and serving sizes generous. Sides scored average 6.9 Service This is always a talking point and particularly hard to score. From the time we were seated until leaving the service was good but not great. Robert was attentive without being intrusive and never rushed, he showed enough knowledge of the wine list to insure it complimented the meal and was quick to come to the table when asked. Service scored well at 7 but was let down a couple of times during the meal when we needed to ask for drinks to be topped, call for service to order bottles and not really selling the options in the menu. Verdict The atmosphere and service made it a relaxing place to spend some time and we all enjoyed the evening. Service was pleasant, wine was good and the room made for easy conversation with the rest of the table. Given it was only the second group meeting comparisons are difficult but the general consensus was a little disappointed with the steaks. Perhaps it was the anticipation but I was expecting really good things and the average of 6 was at least a point below where I was hoping it would be.
