With more than 10 top class steak restaurants in Sydney CBD it made it very difficult to choose the first restaurant for our inaugural SteakBoyz night.
“Located in the lobby of the iconic InterContinental Sydney, Macquarie Street, The Meat & Wine Co has spared no expense in bringing this spectacular steakhouse to Sydney Harbour.” “The Meat & Wine Co is intimate and sophisticated inside the heritage-listed hotel, where contemporary interior design paired with subtle African influences makes the restaurant enticingly unique.” Our first dinner for the Sydney chapter of the SteakBoyz, was held at The Meat & Wine Co Circular Quay, Sydney CBD. With half of the attending members being South African the mention of subtle African influences got us interested. Walking thought the front door of the InterContinental Sydney we were greeted by fine bottles of wine displayed behind a glass wall. The interior of the restaurant was what one would expect of a good steak house, rustic wooden walls and leather seating. We were seated in a private room that resembled a cold room (yes, a fridge where you hang meat!), nice touch. STARTERS We all shared the starters of Biltong and Boerewors with mielie pap croquettes and barbeque relish. It was well presented and very tasty, we converted the Australians who loved the boerewors. MAINS The selection of meat was very impressive; we all tried a different cut of meat with the 400g pasture fed 120 days rib-eye on the bone (dry aged) and the 500g wagyu rump being the best on the night, the wagyu getting a 10/10 from Ryan. The meat was grilled to perfection. The cost of a 300g fillet $60.00. SIDES They had a lot of sides to choose from; we decided to order a range to share. We ordered homemade mash, chickpea salad, baked sweet potato with buffalo ricotta, spinach salad, onion rings and crunchy chips. Needless to say every dish was finished with no negative feedback. SERVICE Our waiter Michael was very attentive; he brought out different cuts of meat to the table and gave a quick lesson on the marble score of each cut, our food arrived together cooked the way we ordered it, our wine glasses were kept full - near perfect. VERDICT Being our first “SteakBoyz” night out in Sydney, we were all very impressed with The Meat & Wine Co from being given our own “private room” to the exceptional service. The stand out being the quality of the steaks which were served, all rated it as one of the best steaks with the exception of one member who had the New Yorker.
