The NYC SteakBoyz found themselves out and about in Williamsburg for an alternative to the traditional Manhattan Steakhouse restaurants. After experiencing various cocktails creations at Freshkills next door, we were then off to Salt + Charcoal, which is describing itself as a “Japanese Grill”…
We were seated in the main room right across the bar, with views on the open kitchen as well as the buzzing activity of Williamsburg’s Bedford Avenue. The restaurant is intimate and provides a tasteful atmosphere. We sampled several of their appetizers which were all on par: Charcoal Grilled Edamame (nice flavor), their signature Tuna Tartare (which they bring as a decomposed art piece and mix in front of you), Crab Cakes, three different rolls (Salmon, Shrimp and Tuna Avocado) as well as their Yuzu Wedge Salad. Our highlights were probably the Edamame, Tuna Tartare and Salad. After waiting quite a while for our main course and hearing jokes about the awesome ”FishBoyz night“ we were having, it finally came and was worth the wait… This restaurant has made a name for itself for the way it prepares and cooks its beef. Tadaaki Ishizaki (formerly at Michelin 3 Star restaurant, Joel Robuchon Tokyo) is hand selecting each piece of prime USDA beef at the purveyor. It is then dry aged for 28 days before charcoal-grilling using the unique crank grill. We shared several orders of the “Porterhouse for Two” as well as a couple of “New York Steak” orders. Both offered quite an interesting experience compared to what we usually get, in the sense that the meat feels less heavy and finds itself in its most simple element. The Porterhouse had the perfect crispy charred outside and juicy rare inside, and it was clearly a highlight for us and worth the trip there. The sides (fries, baked potato, steamed veggies) were well prepared, while not being special. To end our meal, we enjoyed their “Matcha Chocolate Cake” which has an exquisite balancing of flavor. Thanks primarily to its Porterhouse, nice vibe and great location in Williamsburg, Salt + Charcoal really made for a very enjoyable experience that night. And the value was on point.
