The Food Room is home away from home, located in the leafy southern suburbs of Cape Town. It is a small kitchen nestled next to a beautiful old house, with seating for up to fourteen people where you can enjoy a personalized meal of your choice. It is run by Silwood-trained (and Ultimate Braaimaster finalist) chef Kate George, who offers interactive classes for guests. Kate’s brief for the night was “it’s Steak night”. And boy – was it Steak night; there was more meat on offer than the Annual Cannibal Convention. Our night began with an incredible array of starters and canapés. Rib spring rolls, carpaccio, little-bacon-ball-guys, hand-chopped fillet steak tartare with garlic mayo on melba toast….I had to restrain myself to keep space for mains. Our flesh for the night was from her trusted Black Forest butchery, from which Kate sourced and prepared three cuts: T-bone, rump and rib-eye. The meat was all of excellent quality and expertly prepared; though tricky trying to satisfy various gradation requests – but she managed to pull it off. Our mains were complemented by rosemary-infused potato wedges and a delicious mushroom and onion jus. The evening finished off with Kate's signature chocolate brownies which had the boys groaning with delight. All-in-all a great evening of personalised service and incredible meats, proving to be a perfect venue for Cape Town's most discerning steak aficionados.
