So….it’s the end of the year, and time to enjoy the final Steak Night of the year; the venue being the highest overall ranking restaurant.

Looking back, we only managed to enjoy seven Steak Nights this year – but the unanimous winner was Theo’s in Mouille Point. An epic winter night was enjoyed at the beachfront restaurant earlier - and it even came close to dethroning the mighty Carne overall; courtesy of some fine fillet-on-the-bone and 5-star service.

The tone of the evening was set when one of the boys plonked a 5l magnum on the table. Right, that’s how you get value out of R25 corkage! We had specifically requested Cyril as our waiter for the night, and he quickly set about his business – starting us off with plates of tasty biltong. Fillet-on-the-bone (FOTB) was the order of the day, and once again Theo’s delivered.

The perfect sized cut of 350g (less 50g for the bone) was well grilled. Excellent flavours and the tenderness one expects of a fillet. Admittedly the sides were not exactly fine dining, but that’s never going to spoil our evening.

It was indeed a fitting end to the year. Top quality steak, accompanied by top class service.

Steak 9/10 – Now I see why this was the best steak house this year. The FOB was fantastic. I felt Cafe Dijon was the tastiest yet since I’ve been home but this was flippin close in taste stakes (dddish!), and the overall quality of the meat was better. Very happy Mundo.
Service 5/5 – Cyril was great...again! Three times I was outside and all three times I was offered/brought a fresh beer. He commented to me that it was a very easy night due to the entire table going for the FOB. Probably the only food and beverage consultant of theTough Crowd TM to term it ‘an easy night’. Well done Cyril! I too would love to see Lloyd up against him, although it might be like a present day Muhammad Ali taking on a Klitschko brother! Could Lloyd roll back the years??
Sides 3/5 – Onion rings were good but fries, not so much. The biltong was great, although much tastier when I thought it was an ‘on the house’ extra.
Value 5/5 – definitely helped by the monster bottle of wine, and not being a wine drinker, I vote we bring one every time! Ha!

STEAK : Flavour – 60% - 7/10
Texture – 40% - 6/10
Thought I had to try the much fabled FOB and so deviated from my standard choice, fillet, and shouldn’t have. I bet my fillet would have come out tops
SERVICE : 5/5 – Difficult to say anything that has not been said about Cyril, but really, it’s a battle to think of somewhere I have had better service. That guy is at the top of his game.
SIDE : 4/5 : My chips were great actually.

Steak: 8/10 - not at the same level as my previous FOB, but well cooked, tender and tasty.
Sides: 3/5 - average
Service: 5/5 - Cyril
Value: 4/5 - Great value, thanks to Charlie's liberal and hilarious interpretation of corkage and no thanks to the unneccessary order of post-meal biltong.
Ambiance: 3/5 - I initially thought that putting us in a separate room was a good idea, but not sure the other diners in that enclosed space agreed. Old Heinz's over-reaction was quite something to behold, especially considering he was on his way out. And at least one other table moved. Our ability to clear a restaurant is never to be questioned.

Ambiance - Chasing zee German out of zee restaurant +10 points
Service - Cyril, he really does take waitering to the next level but opening Charlie's VAT of wine and then offering him a taste before pouring is pure class +10 points
Steak 9/10 - second best steak of the year…after Theo's
Sides 3/5 seen better
