The August Steak Night - our 76th - marked a notable milestone for us. After eight years, we were looking forward to enjoying our 1,000th steak!
After an enjoyable visit to their Muizenberg eatery two years ago, a Steak Night at the cool and trendy Kloof restaurant in the city was inevitable. The relatively new edition to the popular Harbour House Group is in the heart of one of Cape Town’s many burgeoning nodes. You can enter via Kloof Street; or the newly created Rheede Street entrance - which will take you straight in to the classy Bar Splendido. The bar dominates the entrance, with a retro u-shaped bar set upon black and white tiles. The space and ambiance is hip and energetic, with an eclectic blend of small and communal tables – with a mix of chairs, some wood only, others in upholstered fabric or leather. The kitchen is open plan, so diners get a front row seat to the action. Which leads us to… Starters were plates of grilled calamari and spicy chicken wings, of which the latter proved to be a winner with many at the table. For steak orders, the choice was limited to sirloin, or a 200gram fillet. (The Muizenberg branch kindly did a bespoke 300 gram cut for us before – unfortunately the Kloof eatery was not prepared to do the same). Now something many local restaurants need to focus on is the food delivery. Too often when orders are delivered, waitrons can’t/don’t remember who ordered what. Inevitably we find ourselves playing a game of musical plates. Once we had all swapped dishes and tucked in to our steaks, the feedback on the steaks was largely: 1) too small 2) too sinewy and 3) too much basting. Desserts were a mix of Don Pedros, Apple pie and a very dry – slightly burnt – chocolate brownie. So in the end, Tiger's Milk turned out to be an enjoyable night of good-quality pub grub. It’s not a steakhouse, but then again they don’t promote themselves as such, so fair enough.
