We all know it well. Our first Steak Night at NV-80 was back in March 2014, and it turned out to be our Best Steakhouse of The Year winner. Four years on, we were keen to see if they still served some of Cape Town’s finest steaks.
The restaurant has had a slight revamp, with some new booth-seating adding an intimate touch to the NV-80 dining experience. Otherwise it retains its warm and inviting atmosphere, with high ceilings and sophisticated, yet understated décor. The alfresco balcony for sundowners and a chic centre bar works well, and we enjoyed a few pre-drinks before the main event. We kicked off the evening with a variety of starters. The Trinchado was excellent - cubes of lean fillet of beef in a spicy sauce, along with grilled calamari tubes, and servings of Kingklip Carpaccio. The seafood was superbly fresh, and the accompanying flavours beautifully balanced. On to the main course, the award winning Chalmar beef is still the star of the menu. Known for superior quality and tenderness, the cattle are free of artificial growth hormones or antibiotics, and stress free and harvested on the farm. Their balance diets are an exact science, fed two rations per day to ensure healthy and tasty beasts. Steak orders were split between ribeyes and fillets, with only two Steakboyz opting for the sirloin-on-the-bone. Always difficult to serve a large table order simultaneously, but they did a great job and delivering our 16 steaks within a couple of minutes. Feedback from the table was overall very positive – tender, flavoursome cuts of beef which were all well grilled to order. We were all quite specific to order minimal basting on the steaks, and it makes a difference. The fries weren’t as spectacular; not many of us are fans of the thicky, fluffy chip. The onion-rings are excellent though. Good food is nothing without good service, and Capetonians are often resigned to the latter. But the NV-80 staff is good and attentive, and will look after you from the beginning. So once again NV-80 delivered another brilliant Steak Night; the food is great and service and presentation was excellent. The huge smoking balcony and a great bar make for smooth evening, as you drift in and out between courses. Looking at their menu, the lunch menu boasts pasta dishes, healthy salads and a NV-80 burger or steak roll. If their dinner credentials are anything to go by, it may well deserve a visit for a business lunch. NV-80 certainly cements its place as one of our top 3 restaurants in Cape Town!
