The Mother City recently welcomed another new addition to its burgeoning culinary scene. Primal Eatery pays homage to that dish that we love so dearly, using a classic wood-fired grill concept. Primal Eatery punts themselves as a meatery; in fact the word “steakhouse” is forbidden there. It’s a restaurant for meat traditionalists who love the taste of meat; no heavily-basted cuts, but rather celebrating the inherent character of the meat. The menu boasts some interesting dishes – the peri-peri free range chicken sounds delicious, and I’ll have to return for the Greek-styled Lamb shoulder one day. But we’re here for steak… AMBIANCE The décor is a mixture of warm tones, with wooden tables and textured walls. Part of the restaurant seating is a few booth tables – which always make for a cosy and intimate setting. The bar is inviting, but on a balmy Cape Town night, enjoy your drinks on the terrace. FOOD Surprisingly, the menu does not present the various steak cuts available. This is due to the availability of the (different) cuts on the night. We were not disappointed though, and had a good choice of sirloin, ribeye, fillet, flatiron and rump. Popular cuts ordered by the table were the sirloin, ribeye and fillet (along with a few Tomahawks to share). Our steaks were accompanied by ‘’textures of onion’’ and truffle mustard, along with oregano chips. Our meals were all beautifully plated, and steaks pretty much grilled as ordered. The quality of the beef was evident, and the owners clearly focus on good meat suppliers. SERVICE The restaurant is only a few months old, but the service was faultless. Warmly welcomed by the manager; waitrons on the ball, and boasting good knowledge of the menu. There was a bit of a gap between the two tables food delivery, with fifteen SteakBoyz to serve. Other restaurants do get it right though, so it’s not impossible. Otherwise, our glasses were never empty, and we are always under the attentive eyes of the waitrons. The other diners seem to have the same experience, creating a vibey buzz in the restaurant. VERDICT Primal Eatery proved to be good night out - warm atmosphere with great service, and most importantly good steak! Great attention is paid to food presentation, and the food is well prepared with amazing flavours. The only major negative was the cost; the general feeling from the table was overpriced. You can certainly get the same for less in Cape Town. Steak 7,3 Sides 6,8 Value 3,3 Service 8,1 Ambiance 8,0 Total 6,8 Primal Eatery 50 New Church Street, Cape Town 021 422 3232 [email protected]
