Uncle Jacks Meat House in Astoria, Queens, was the sleepy yet welcoming spot for our March Steakboyz NYC. Almost everybody trekked out to the edge of the boro of Queens which was not easy to get to. We were able to meet with the Chef at the time of our seating and construct the entire menu, which was a nice touch and provided great input for the quantity and cuts of meat.
The highlight of the apps was the meat hook hung bacon with syrup and peanut butter, interesting and surprisingly delicious, albeit atypical for a bacon starter. Generally the meat was prepared and seasoned well. The round corner table was difficult to serve and was an unnecessary complication to the already rowdy crew. While the sides were barely memorable, maybe thanks to the copious amounts of red wine, the stand out was the crème brulee style creamed corn, which was eaten by the bowl full. A solid recommendation for a neighbourhood spot, but only worth the venture deep into Astoria on a potential special occasion.
