Veldt, Hout Bay - A Braai Without the Fuss

There’s something quintessentially South African about gathering around the fire with friends, tongs in hand, smoke in the air, and meat sizzling over hot coals. But let’s be honest - sometimes, you just want the braai experience without the responsibility of actually manning the grill. That’s where Veldt, Hout Bay’s wood-fired steakhouse and smokehouse, steps in and delivers.

Nestled in the heart of Hout Bay, Veldt is more than just a steakhouse - it’s a tribute to South African food heritage. Equal parts deli, smokehouse and braai eatery, Veldt leans heavily into the primal pleasures of fire cooking, yet it does so with refinement and reverence for the ingredients it works with. It’s where smoke, char, and spice come together to celebrate the land.

Our group of carnivores arrived for our monthly Steak Night dinner and were seated in a semi-private area - enough space to stretch out and dig in, without being entirely cut off from the warm, crackling ambience of the restaurant. The familiar scent of wood smoke lingered in the air, a prelude to what was to come.

The Meat of the Matter
When it came to the steak, Veldt kept it simple: sirloin or fillet. While we appreciate a menu that doesn’t overcomplicate the essentials, we did find the steak offering a touch limited. That said, what we had was solid. Steaks were well-seasoned and grilled over open flame, achieving that deep char and smoky finish we were hoping for. While not the most mind-blowing cuts we’ve had in the city, the fillet scored a decent 6.9/10.

Sides That Shine
The sides were a pleasant surprise. A shared spread included home-made sourdough with smoked butter, pork ribs, braaibroodjies, and a brisket & cheddar sandwich. The ribs were standouts - fall-off-the-bone tender, with a sticky, smoky BBQ glaze that lingered just long enough. But the real star? The braaibroodjies. Cheesy, crispy, smoky perfection. If Veldt ever decides to go national with these, they’ll be cult favourites in no time. Overall, we gave the sides a 3.3/5.

 Service and Setting
Service was friendly and mostly on point. Our waiter handled a busy table with good humour and efficiency, though we did have to request forks when our mains arrived - a minor oversight, but noticeable. Service score: 3.7/5.

The atmosphere at Veldt is exactly what you’d hope from a braai-focused spot - laid-back, warm, and filled with the scent of smoke and seared meat. Our group may have been a little rowdy, as evidenced by a few sideways glances from neighbouring tables, but we still appreciated the semi-private setup. Ambiance: 3.8/5.

The Verdict
Veldt nails the South African spirit of fire-cooked food. While there’s room for improvement in variety and polish, the experience feels authentic and heartfelt. It’s a place where meat-lovers can gather, dig in, and not have to lift a finger - except to raise a fork or a glass.

Final score: 7.1/10 – a respectable showing and a steakhouse we’d happily return to, especially for those unbeatable braaibroodjies.
