Steak and beer. Two things that will make most men drool in anticipation. But the Woodstock Grill & Tap is not your traditional steakhouse. Located in the heart of the re-energised Woodstock, it is contemporary and modern, serving juicy steaks and craft beer from partners Woodstock Brewery below.
The Woodstock Grill & Tap (WG&T) offers a unique experience. Start off with a tour of one of the best local craft breweries; with a peek into their brewing process. Which is exactly what we did, after which we enjoyed a small beer tasting at the bar – sipping on their Pot Belge, Hazy Daze, Happy Pills and The Californicator. FOOD So after potting about in the brewery, appetites were well and truly whetted. The big sell for the evening was for the Wing Rib steak, not a very common steakhouse cut here in Cape Town. The Wing Rib sits where the sirloin meets the forerib, and usually makes for a good roasting joint on the bone. It’s almost as tender as fillet, but not as expensive - and with less fat as the forerib. Plates of marrow bones were served with the steaks, and smearing a forkful of marrow on the meat really enhanced the flavour. Some guys enjoyed their steaks, others were not so enamoured with the unusual cut. As with most of the meat at WG&T, you have the option of grass or grain fed beef. SERVICE Service was smooth, and the waiters are friendly and eager to assist. Our (many) steaks arrived together and the glasses were never empty. VERDICT Admittedly the restaurant lacked a bit of vibe (for a payday Thursday), and this was amplified in the voluminous restaurant. WG&T do have regular special days though, like T-Bone Tuesday, Wing Rib Wednesday and Thirsty Thursday. Check out their Facebook page for details.
