Buzbey Grill is one of Cape Town’s oldest eateries, run by the legendary chef-patron Jimmy for more than 20 years now. You can’t miss it as you enter Sea Point, with its retro neon signage.
The art deco theme continues inside the small restaurant; with a curved bar and black-and-white photographs of classic artists on the walls. The kitchen is open, with a unique copper-wall backdrop, and we got to see Jimmy doing what he does best. FOOD Fresh table bread was followed by plates of deep-fried, and pan-fried calamari (whole baby calamari cooked in garlic & chilli sauce), along with springbok carpaccio. The steak cut options are limited to pretty much your classic steakhouse T-bone, rump and fillet – but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Rather focus on a manageable menu, and do it well. And do it well does ole Jimmy. I’m always weary of waiters who – upon asking what cuts are good – instantly recommend the fillet. It’s a safe cut; and usually one of the priciest. Regardless, what makes a good steakhouse of course, is lots of good meat, and there’s plenty of quality grade grass-fed meat at Buzbey Grill. Our steaks were all grilled as ordered, and pretty much everyone enjoyed their steaks. No self-respecting steakhouse would be complete without a good selection of side dishes, and Buzbey is no exception. The usual suspects are all there - onion rings, stir-fried veggies or fried mushrooms – and the home-styled fries were hot, crispy and golden. SERVICE Our waiter was efficient and all meals were delivered together, on warm plates. Frosty glasses were always topped up with cold beer, and we pretty much wanted for nothing. In fact, he even took one of our phones to charge in the back! VERDICT It was a cold winter’s night in Cape Town, so a bit disappointing to be in an empty restaurant without any cosy, bustling ambiance. Still - it easy to see why this restaurant has persevered, and has such a loyal following. The steaks are great, and at good value too. Definitely not to be missed.
