The London Steakboyz Volume 2 took place on 9th June 2016 and it didn’t take long for a member to select one of the most renowned steak franchises in London with a steak pedigree that left the mouths of the Steakboyz watering when it was announced. With the host picking Hawksmoor, in Knightsbridge, we knew we were guaranteed one of the best steaks London had to offer.
Hawksmoor with its glamorous art deco interior is situated close to London’s iconic Harrods and various cultural institutions in Knightsbridge. Hawksmoor’s steaks are farmed from ethically-reared traditional British breeds that any meat lover would be expected to tick-off their meat bucket list when travelling through the UK. Descending down the staircase and in to the basement was like a child unwrapping his Christmas present as the venue opened up in to a stylish bar which stretched in to the main restaurant area. As the beautiful host took us to the table, you could not help notice the shine of the brass and the pearl marble subtly highlighting the wealth usually associated with this particular part of London. The large party table was perfectly arranged and sat all 9 of us comfortably. The Steakboyz were ready for a meat feast! FOOD It did not take long for drinks order to start to flow and questions on which cuts to go for from the chalk board on the corresponding walls or the various cuts from the leather bound menu. Chateaubriand, Porterhouse, Prime rib, T-bone, Rib-eye, Fillet Mignon either per 100g or special cuts between 900g/1.1kg to share were available. With all the excitement a mob mentality began to take hold when the board of cuts arrived at the table and the waitress began to show visible signs of pressure as she cracked under the pressure of the questions, at one point being unable to explain which cut was which. Unable to recover, she left unable to fully explain the cuts, which was a bit of shock and was clearly noted by the group. The starters were a welcomed distraction to the failed board review attempt with the steak tartar, triple cooked chips, crab salad, and the Mac and Cheese hitting all the rights notes with the group. The winner of the starters was the Oysters which were meaty, juicy and the perfect aperitif before switching to steak. With the temperature medium rare across the board taken by the waitress, the most popular cuts were the 950g Porterhouse and 1kg T-bone to share and the 400g Rib-eye and Fillet. This was Hawksmoor’s opportunity to recover from Steak-board gate and they did not falter. The steaks were perfectly prepared across the board with a medium-rare temperature, with the quality exactly what one would expect for the price as the scores shows with the Steaks scoring 80 out of a possible 90 points. SERVICE Service was good, but unfortunately there is no excuse for not being able to recall in detail all the meats represented on the board and the service never really recovered from that moment, with each subsequent mistake being amplified as unacceptable no matter what the waitress tried to do to recover. VERDICT Overall London Steakboyz volume 2 was another great night out where the steak stole the show, but given it is Hawksmoor I don’t think anyone was in doubt of the quality on display. If only the service and the vibe of this particular Hawksmoor lived up to the reputation of the locations in Seven Dials, then we would have seen a much higher total score than 76.7%.
