Searching for a new steakhouse to try can be pretty tough going in Cape Town when your steak club has been to 64 prior sittings in and around the Mother City. Some out of the box thinking led us to Pete Goffe-Wood and his Kitchen Cowboys experience. Pete is no stranger to the limelight having judged all four seasons of Masterchef SA and is the currently judging Ultimate Braaimaster. Given all the credentials he should know his steak, and know it he did.
Now straight off the bat this would be quite a tricky evening to score, this was not a conventional restaurant but rather a private kitchen cookery school style experience for the 16 of us in Pete's very homely premises in Woodstock. All creature comforts were on show, with pour yourself beer on tap, wine by the plenty and a couple of fires burning in anticipation for the steaks that were about to be grilled. Prior to actually sitting down and eating, we were treated to an exceptional masterclass on all things steak. Including what really is the best steak to order, how it should be cooked and tips and tricks for get the most out of your meat. It really was an experience to chat to Pete and pose questions about steak related things that had been bugging over the years and for which we didn't have an answer. Rather than offering up an ala-carte menu Pete treated us to a four course sit down meal and served us various cuts of his choosing. An unusual experience for some, especially those who like to order fillet every time, but a worthwhile one at that to stretch horizons. Ambiance Private, homely, inside and outside and a nice long table to seat a bunch of mates. Obviously no restaurant "buzz" but certainly a nice departure and Pete certainly gave us the run of the place and joined us for dinner too. A bit of a raconteur he is and we enjoyed the storytelling. Food A four course meal which started with a truly exceptional fillet tartare, followed by an interesting smoked fillet and the main event: four pieces of meat including flat iron, spider, rib-eye and skirt steaks. The meat was certainly well rested with some suggesting them to be a little tepid, but overall it was an interesting journey to sample various cuts to test for flavour and texture. The steaks were accompanied by truly cheffy styled sides, including a delicious cauliflower cheese and some roasted baby potatoes. Not your usual 300 gram fillet, chips and two veg so it made a nice change. Service Again not really a restaurant, more a self-service bar for the drinks and all very casual and homely. Verdict This is a place to come and meet a great chef, learn and eat. If you have "done it all", get a crowd together and book an evening with Pete. You will learn a great deal, have a very enjoyable evening and do something that's a little out of the norm. All of us came away from the experience certainly a little wiser when it comes to all things steak.
