 We returned to The Butcher Shop & Grill in Mouille Point exactly one year later, after what was a less than satisfactory visit last year. And we’re happy to report that this time they lived up to their reputation as a premier steakhouse; and it was certainly a Steak Night to remember.
Our first Steak Night for 2016 was on a beautiful balmy Cape Town evening, and there are few better locations to enjoy it than Mouille Point’s promenade. The Butcher Shop & Grill (BS&G) is beautifully set, with the lighthouse across the road – and we even got to witness the magnificent MS Queen Elizabeth set sail in the bay. FOOD We started our evening with an amazing array of starters, and we feasted on platters of carpaccio, biltong, smokey-boerie and sticky ribs. All lip-smacking delicious – but the prize goes to the succulent Wagyu starter slivers. It was some of the best meat we have enjoyed; and I could have dined on that all night! Now - our host for the evening is somewhat of a regular at BS&G, and swears by the Argentinian Ribeye. As such, the majority of the table took his recommendation. And the feedback was incredible. Tasty, juicy and delicious with just the right amount of chew that you expect from a quality ribeye cut. “Geez it was incredibly tasty, tender and a perfect size. Can't remember enjoying a steak so much for ages.” The sides of butternut and spinach were equally exceptional; and never before have I seen a table of grown men gush at onion rings. And some of us like to gush. SERVICE We were quite a large table, but our waiter for the evening Deon was excellent. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and super-efficient. Our meals were delivered flawlessly, and we were not left wanting or thirsty all evening. VERDICT The Butcher Shop & Grill is a modern, high-end steakhouse, with an incredible location. The menu boasts an impressive selection of prime local cuts of beef (and lamb and game), along with some Argentinian ribeye steaks and Australian Wagyu. If you’re after a carnivorous meal, then this trendy restaurant should hit the spot. NB - if you have a braai planned and fancy a whirl with the tongs, grab some prime cuts from their adjoining deli.
