For nearly two decades, Carlyles on Derry has been a favourite eatery for Capetonians, nestled below Table Mountain. Traditionally an Italian-themed restaurant, Carlyles welcomed the Steakboyz for Steak Night.
Locals and visitors have been going to Carlyle's for many years now, and their quality and consistency is one of its hallmarks. The thin-based, oven-baked gourmet pizzas are some of the best in the city, and the fresh handmade pasta dishes are delicious too. But….we were here for steak.
The evening kicked off with platters of chicken livers, carpaccio, and seared tuna. Many of the Steakboyz are not fans of chicken livers, but those spicy little nuggets were amazing and received rave reviews from the table.
Carlyles normally only serve a rump or T-bone cut, but the owner was very accommodating and offered to provide sirloin and fillet for the evening. The bulk of steak orders were fillet (11), and T-bones (5). The T-bone steaks were sublime, and was scored a superb 9.2 - ranked 3rd best in Steakboyz history.
Our waitron for the evening proved to be one of the best waiters we’ve had. Super-efficient, always there when needed, and he really knew his product. Delivering 18 steaks at the same time proved to be a bit of a challenge; but Carlyles is not really fitted out as a steakhouse so we can’t be too harsh. As you can tell from the steak scores, everyone was more than happy with their steaks.
The Carlyle brothers have a recipe that works; it’s your quintessential neighbourhood eatery where locals come to enjoy quality food in a relaxed yet vibey ambiance. For an Italian restaurant, they exceeded expectations with excellent steaks and great service. With all review scores tallied, Carlyles is our 5th Best Steak Night – a phenomenal achievement considering the illustrious steakhouses in the top five like Carne, Don Armando and Hussar Grill.
NB: look out for their Monthly Wine Club, when a winemaker talks guests through some of their wines. You get to taste and buy at cellar-door prices.
