M. Wells could be described as the anti-steakhouse steakhouse, for a nice change of pace. Quality steak is a given for this Michelin-starred restaurant while the starters, sides and desserts provide a welcomed alternative to the standards. Montreal cuisine is folded nicely into a classic NY experience. Location is out-of-the-way while still easily accessible, with a great atmosphere provided in a former auto body garage.
Our dinner party all shared pieces of Porterhouse cuts cooked medium rare. They were prepared in the fire pit that we could contemplate in the open kitchen from our table. The result was nice quality and enjoyable porterhouse, with some interesting sauces that came with it aside. A couple of guests felt the meat could have been seasoned a little more. Some of us wished we had also tried to wagyu which was on the menu as well. Big highlights of the meal were the appetizers and side orders that we shared, which were both unusual and delicious. The aligot was perfectly done, amongst other several great items. The Poutine was not served hot enough and not loved by all guests, especially the ones who are not familiar with this traditional dish from Quebec. The service was professional and friendly. Flow and timing from the kitchen was spot on and is easily overlooked when done right, but a big disappointment when not. Also, the warmth and kindness of owner Sarah Obraitis added a very nice "friends and family" feel to the dinner experience. The Long Island City location and design of this former auto body shop space made for a cool and relaxed atmosphere. The beautiful bar section, opened kitchen, brick wall, high ceilings and skylight created an interesting environment for our monthly get together. Only setback was the acoustic, which is hard to optimize in such a space and make it challenging to have conversations with a 10 people party. Probably much less of a concern on smaller dinner parties. Lastly, everyone in the party seemed very pleased by the value of their dinner experience when the check came in.
