The month of May took us to one of the last great New York City steakhouses this group had yet to review in its storied 3 year history. Expectations were naturally high for the dinner, especially when we were promised what on paper looked like the ideal private room for us.
As we trudged up the two floors of the ancient establishment we all got a sense of the history of the restaurant, which lays claim to being the oldest steakhouse in the city. Once we completed our trip we were disappointed to see we were assigned what appeared to be a secondary public seating area, far too big for our group. The fact we were the only ones in the room exacerbated the empty feeling. Our waiter enthusiastically welcomed us all, and paid homage to us as being the “Steakboyz”, and a hats off to him as largely the service was more than satisfactory and well received by the group. Oddly enough, to me at least, the other aspects to the dinner were not as well received, at least by how things were rated. What I will say in general is that the steak was certainly above average for the quality of meats we have enjoyed, not just this year but in years past. Commentary at the table for the sides was noticeably positive, although the ratings did not appear to match the narrative of the night. What I find hard to believe is that the overall score for the restaurant was lower than the prior month’s visit to The Palm in Tribeca, a restaurant which can be charitably characterized as an average example of a chain steakhouse. And the fact that restaurant should be the current leader for this year’s restaurants is a travesty to the Old Homestead and a stain on our reputation as a legitimate steakhouse review group. I challenge and encourage those Steakboyz allocated hosting duties for the latter months of the year to keenly select a venue that will comfortably beat The Palm and restore order to this universe.
