Peter Luger’s is a NYC Standard and thusly, we HAD to put it on the list for the Steakboyz first visit to Brooklyn. Like many restaurants that have turned into tourist destinations, we have all heard the disappointment that accompanies someone’s high expectations. Most of the Steakboyz NYC had dined a t “Luger’s" before but still we hoped beyond hope that something would surprise us.
After a crowded drink, the group was "Whisked away to what felt like the kids table, in an upstairs room with little ambiance and monotone lighting”. Almost everyone mentioned the interrogation-level illumination - politely one SteakBoy wrote "lighting did not capture the mood”. Much of this can be overlooked with a special waiter or exceptional meal - for the most part, none of us could overlook anything. The service came in as "minimal attention” while very knowledgeable and direct. With a sparse selection of sides - the bacon is the clear standout but for the most part "were non-impactful”. Can the steak save Luger’s review? Here’s where the expectations take over - "steaks were good, as expected, well prepared, nothing more nothing less”. Many of the Boyz agree the meat was one of the better we have had in this first year but the “light” preparation was not enough to get us to return for the overall experience. Oddly we mostly all agree that "the medium steak was significantly better” than our medium-rare cut. A “limited Menu” helped make Luger’s the best value to date. So aside from the high quality of meat and the bacon, you really do “get what you pay for”. Sorry Peter.
