Pirates Plumstead

In September we ventured on a second journey to the infamous Pirates in Plumstead. Our numbers have swelled over the years though, so it was a first for some of us.

Nothing much has changed – certainly not much has been spent on any décor upgrades. The restaurant is modelled around a nautical theme – plenty of dark wood and little alcoves. But don’t judge a book by its cover; Where Chefs Eat (a guide to chefs’ favourite restaurants), features it as one of a few local mzanzi restaurants – especially for a late night meal. And if you arrive early for dinner, you can always entertain yourself at the one-arm bandits…

Their flame-grilled steaks are just some of the items that are on offer from a comprehensive menu. Tender fillets and flavoursome rumps come with a variety of toppings, stuffings and sauces - as well as the old classic sides of creamed spinach, butternut and chips. Their wine selection is quite dated though, so take your own if you prefer quality vino.

Fillet and rump were the order of the day. Feedback from the table was not entirely complimentary – with a few cuts not grilled exactly to order, and most bemoaning the excessive basting sauce. Chips were of the thicker, pub variety – not everyone’s cup of tea, and the onion rings were oily and soggy. For our large table of fifteen our waitress handled fairly well, but she did tend to swing the lead a bit now and then.

Our table was front and centre to The Good Life band, the live entertainment for the evening. Unfortunately the music was way too loud, and their best moments were between sets. Having to shout to your fellow diners is just not cool, but maybe they appeal to your Joe Blow.

Pirates is an old-fashioned steakhouse that obviously satisfies its many regular, local customers. Unfortunately, their pricing no longer makes them good value. You can have much better steak at better establishments for the same price.
