August saw the Steakboyz at Rocco Steakhouse, which is located in the “classy” stretch of 72 Madison Avenue, a few blocks north of Madison Square Park. When you dine at Rocco’s you are getting the authentic New York steakhouse experience: upscale and professional, with warmth and outstanding food and drink of every kind. And thankfully Rocco is under the tourist radar, unless you staying at the Roger down the street.
Our group was 10 strong, and manager Patrycja Mirecki gave us the choice of dining in a private or semi-private setting. We choose the semi-private room which turned out to be a great choice, as we were in the middle of the room in a long table surrounded by smaller tables of diners where we could feel the vibe. A message to Patrycja had the arrangements in hand beforehand. We gathered at the bar which was full at 7pm, and a team of bartenders kept up with us while we chatted and browsed the large format wine menu, because you never know how the evening will go. So we were off to a strong start from a service perspective. After a few rounds we were ready to be seated. I’m not sure how many servers were attending us, but they seemed magical. Friendly and professional at the same time, like the family I never had! Soon they had brought two giant towers of food, which were compliments of the house. Thanks! The tower had everything you would expect of a seafood restaurant, and chilled perfectly. Of course for the mains we went for dual 34oz Tomahawks which were absolutely perfect. The wine was flowing at this point, thanks again to the attentive servers, and we settled into the meal which also included mushrooms and fries. All awesome! We are not big desert people, but when it shows up, we like it! So after getting through all the courses it was agreed that Rocco had been one of the better all-around steakhouse experiences in recent memory. I find myself recommending people to Rocco in part because it’s a hidden gem in a great neighbourhood, and mostly because it offers all the standards you want at a Manhattan steakhouse, but the way they should be prepared and served. This is really kind of novel, as many of the better steakhouses are trying to differentiate themselves via the menu, but Rocco is doing it through competence.
