Sparks is one of the few “classic” NYC steak houses yet in rotation and the NYC Steakboyz ode it a list. There is plenty of history there (google it!) and we felt it deserving, even on a Yankees playoff game night! The prep and attention from the “behind the scenes” staff was on par and the service, at least to the host (some guests disagree) also warranted numerous thank yous and appreciation here.
We weathered the game, but in doing so took us from the aura of the main dining room, although I doubt it would have saved our reviews. Now to the most important part, the steak - the preparation made it one of our lowest rated steaks. Across the board it, it was the “raw” centre that had come close to inedible in a few reviewers eyes (mine included) that made the medium (we usually order a small portion to compare…and we have been often surprised and the quality of flavor in a “medium”). The sides were good but did not help the lack of perceived value. All said and done, Sparks missed its mark (apologies to the mob) and while I wouldn’t mind trying the upper room in a small crew, I think there is a better char out there.
