For our April Steak Night we headed downtown to the Meatpacking District for a departure from the traditional New York steakhouse. STK Downtown is a modern steakhouse take with a glitzy night club vibe. While STK is part steakhouse and part club it actually turned out the best steaks of the year, though the experience was found lacking in other areas. Small annoyances like having to show ID to enter and taking an elevator to the second floor coat check were somewhat mitigated by the vibrant bar scene and expertly crafted cocktails. Despite the booming, cavernous space with many drinking, dining and lounge areas we were tucked into a back corner table that was probably more appropriate for 9 persons instead of 11.
FOOD We started off the night with the shellfish platter consisting of oysters, king crab, shrimp and ceviche. The platter was fresh, delicious and universally enjoyed. The same can’t be said for the foie gras appetizer which was bland and confused. For sure the steaks were the star of the show and we sampled multiple cuts including the porterhouse, massive cowboy rib steak and the much heralded special, the Delmonico cut. The steaks were seasoned well with a great sear and cooked to perfection. The favourite, by far, was the Delmonico cut. Named after NYC’s original steakhouse (Delmonico’s circa 1827), a Delmonico cut rib-eye consists of two heart cuts of ribeye tied together with butcher’s twine. It resembles a filet mignon in appearance but is moister due to the marbled nature of the select ribeye cut. The true Delmonico preparation is rare these days, as it renders the remaining pieces of ribeye unsaleable as steak cuts, and is therefore less profitable than a pair of choice ribeyes. We all raved about this fantastic surprise treat. Sides were varied and on par, with the lobster mac and cheese receiving many accolades. SERVICE Service was attentive, though they could have helped us navigate the menu better, as many of us felt underfed...unusual for a Steak Night. That being said, our cups were full and our servers were accessible and friendly. VERDICT STK Downtown delivers a delicious steak in a nightclub setting, perhaps too clubby. Cramped quarters and intense volume definitely hampered the dining experience. As did the poor value, which was partially expected given the reputation and the Meatpacking location. Overall STK was a good kickoff to a great night that included our special guest from the newly minted London Steakboyz Chapter.
