 The Eatery Wood Fired Grill (TEWFG) offers local diners a refreshing dining experience. Simple, good food cooked on an open wood fire; coupled with their unique BYOB policy that allows you to bring your favourite bottle of plonk or even craft beer.
The Claremont branch is a brother restaurant to the original TEWFG in Wynberg, which quickly turned into a popular southern suburbs restaurant. Keen to expand, owners Deon and Marius opened the second restaurant in Belvedere Square in 2014. Starters Deon started us off with some juicy sirloin starters using a technique they’ve perfected. They use rooikrans wood, and grill the steak directly on the coals. Surprisingly, you don’t get a mouthful of ash with your steak – and the platters of sliced steak were delicious. Mains The menu is varied and caters to most, with specialties like steak, marinated pork ribs, roast chicken or grilled fish. But we’re here for steak, remember. Well, most of us anyways. The standard menu only offers two cuts, sirloin and beef fillet – but there was a prime rib up on the specials board – so it gave us slightly more choice. The steaks are simply seasoned - rubbed with extra virgin olive oil, fresh herbs, salt and black pepper. Our steaks were well grilled and delivered faultlessly with sides and sauces. The (buttermilk) onion rings were beautifully crisp, and they even offer a tasty cauliflower mash for the (growing) Bantonian masses. Service Our waitron for the evening was superb. Beer buckets always full, wine glasses always topped up. She was ever-present and helpful and seemed to get everything right. Verdict It’s refreshing to see restaurateurs challenge the norm and try new things, and The Eatery Wood Fired Grill certainly do that. Offering wet-aged, grain fed meat grilled directly on coals is definitely unusual in the steak world. But they pull it all off – well. It almost feels like enjoying a good braai at a mate’s home, feasting on delicious food just the way you like it. Its great food and great value.
