For a while Muizenberg has needed an eatery to make waves in its rather uninspiring culinary scene. And the hip restaurant and bar Tiger’s Milk does just that.
Tiger’s Milk ticks all the trendy hipster boxes - raw brick, wood, along with eclectic quirky light fittings – and it all sets the scene for a rather laidback décor and ambiance. And of course there are ample opportunities to enjoy the beautiful ocean views, while relaxing on comfy sofas. Food Now Tiger’s Milk was always a likely Steak Night venue, but initially they only served 200g steaks - so we were pleased to find they now offered 300g cuts on the menu. The steak options at Tiger’s Milk are limited to rump, fillet, ribeye and sirloin – served with a side and sauce. Which is fair enough, they’re not a steakhouse, and offer plenty of other great looking food like burgers, ribs and pizza. Our evening began with starter platters of grilled calamari, tempura prawns and garlic pizza. The calamari and prawns were well cooked and tasty, but most felt that the pizza was quite dry. On to the steaks, where table feedback was quite mixed. For starters – many felt that their steaks were not 300 grams in size. And quite a few complained their steaks were overcooked, and not juicy enough. Someone ordered the ribeye with Café De Paris sauce, which arrived as a solid, frozen lump in a dish. PS - Craft beers are a big focus here, and there are numerous beers on tap from four different breweries (Jack Black, Devil’s Peak, CBC and Woodstock). Service Service for the evening was unfortunately not so sharp; our waiter was a bit inattentive to our table’s needs. A few beers served in another brewery’s branded glass, and we had to reorder drinks now and then. Still - the food generally came out quickly enough. Verdict Tiger’s Milk is first and foremost a restaurant and beer venue, but on some nights it livens up with music by local DJs. It’s refreshing to see a restaurant that doesn’t rely solely on their seaside views; the food is good, with an excellent beer selection. And for those who may dropped in after a surf session, there are change rooms and showers - as well as lockers for surfboards.
