It was another fantastic year of enjoying some of the best steaks in Cape Town. Four years – and 450 steaks - later we continue to discover great restaurants that serve great quality beef. It’s a thankless task, but someone’s gotta do it.
As is our annual tradition, our final steak night is at the year’s top ranking restaurant. And so our full contingent of 19 Steakboyz descended upon NV-80 in Sea Point, where our first visit in March blew us away with some sublime food and excellent service. The Gonçalves brothers of Pigalle fame really displayed their knack for running top restaurants. The manager for the night recommended the rib-eye steaks - “all the taste of rib-eye but as tender as fillet” he said. With 19 chaps though, we managed to order a variety of cuts: Sirloin-On-The-Bone, rump and even a cheeky 400g gram Fillet Grande all found their way to the table. Always difficult to serve such a large table order simultaneously, but they did a decent job. Our two waitresses did seem a bit at sea this time though – and our starters never quite made it to the table. Some restaurants seem to have a policy of serving all the steaks first, and then the fries. This always seems to backfire for some guys, who have to wait too long for their fries. Rather serve a complete order, I say. Verdict? Pretty much good feedback all round again on the quality of the steaks, which were all well grilled to order. Top Tip: squeeze some lemon over your steak, to add a little zip. The fries weren’t as spectacular, but the onion-rings were glorious and made up for it. In the end NV-80 delivered another very good night out. The food is great and the service more than adequate this time. The huge smoking balcony and a great bar make for an excellent venue. They didn't quite reach the highs of our first visit, but they definitely didn't disappoint. Happy holidays – until next year!
